Buy an acoustic with a built in pickup in case you want to play through an amp. I play an Ovation Legend, sweet guitar, no doubt. If you buy junk it will play like it and sound like it… treat yourself to quality and get a nice instrument. Ovation, Fender, Martin and Taylor are all cool, but also beware of name brand guitars like Ibanez that produce a low end guitar for cheap… they are junk. Go to eBay, some great deals are there. If you are on a smaller budget, consider the Fender Acoustic Stratocaster.

if you’re just starting out, pick one up at wal-mart…they’re inexpensive and will get the job done
if you decide to become serious about it, you can invest in a nicer guitar later…

Oh my god! Don’t go to Wal-mart. Those guitars will cause more damage to your hands than anything.
Check this out.
Brand isn’t that important since there are many, many brands that make good guitars. Fender, Seagull, Takamine, Martin, Taylor, Breedlove, Gibson, etc. The more important thing is what kind of music do you want to play and what can you afford. Do you want to play Rock, Jazz, R&B, Folk, etc.
